Position Title – Community Land Organizer

Position Type – (1) , Part-Time, Satellite Office

Position Salary : $26.50/hr., not to exceed $11K, up to 10 hours per week. Semi-monthly payment. Mileage reimbursement available.

Position Start Date : Immediately Upon Hire

Position End Date : March 15, 2027, or longer if more funding is procured.

Position Description

Company – Jewel of Justice is a Fresno-based small business that provides women’s personal and professional development services, innovative intervention services in the areas of Black maternal health and Black behavioral health, and professional development services in trauma informed care and health equity. We specialize in providing and protecting space for the healing and flourishing of Black lives.

Position – This position is made possible by our 18-month second round of funding grant (September 15, 2026 – March 15, 2027) from the Packard Foundation which focuses on Advancing Black Maternal Behavioral Health . We are looking for an individual who has a demonstrated track record of working with and for Black and African American communities, and who is ready to share their creative energy, knowledge, and skill-set towards addressing Black maternal and infant mortality in Fresno County through land-based management, education, and organizing on two-acres of leased land.

Position Responsibilities

This person will report directly to the President and Project Manager, Dr. Karen Crozier, and engage 1) Leadership Council (LC) 4 Black Self-Care & Wellness and 2) prospective volunteers, funders, and partners in the initial phase of land activation. Currently, the Series has seven core sessions a year that runs from Black History Month through Juneteenth, and at least one bonus outdoor, 3 days and 2 nights, camping session from July through August. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Provide management (stewardship) of two acres of crop-covered land located in Fresno County in Sanger, CA near Wonder Valley that align with environmental regenerative and restorative practices

2. In consultation with the Project Manager and partners, implement phase one of the company’s Land Assessment Report which is mowing, soil prep, planting, and creating paths

3. Assist in recruiting, training, and supervising staff members, LC, and volunteers responsible for operations on the land

4. Assist in educating, and collaborating with, Leadership Council and prospective volunteers, funders, and partners on our land activation build out

5. Contribute to defining and promoting our Eco-Village Approach in the Advancing Black Maternal Self-Care &Wellness Series

6. Attend sessions in the Series

7. Remain under budget on land activation implementation

8. Attend staff meetings, and quarterly meetings with Leadership Council and Project Funder to provide reports on land activation process and progress including, but not limited to, the number of Black birthing women/people, infants/children, and dads, volunteers, partners, and funders/donors engaged as well as providing pathways of belonging and stewardship for Black birthing women/people and their families.

Position Requirements

➢ Bachelor’s degree in public health, environmental science, community psychology, agriculture, business administration, or plant science, or at least five years of experience working in a similar community-driven, land-based education project as our Advancing Black Maternal Self-Care & Wellness Series: An Eco-Village Approach.

➢ Knowledge of food sovereignty and farming practices among Black and African American people, or Indigenous communities

➢ Experience in community organizing and public education efforts

➢ Excellent time management and intentional interpersonal skills that help to facilitate a culture of care and responsibility

➢ Awareness of and respect for cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds and experiences within self and others

➢ Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

➢ Ability to identify and secure funding through grants and donations

➢ Background in working in new programs, projects, or initiatives

➢ Dependable

Preferred

➢ Master’s degree or higher in agriculture, community psychology, environmental science, or plant science.

➢ Knowledge and application of Black Doula and Granny Midwifery in integrated maternal health and wellness

➢ Knowledge of evaluation through data gathering, analysis, and reporting

Certificates/Licenses

A valid California driver’s license with proof of vehicle insurance and reliable transportation or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
